General requirements for laser hardening

The expected hardness of the tools depends on the material qualities, i.e. the tools to be hardened must be made of a suitable material.

  • 0.2% – 0.4% carbon -> surface hardness < 50 HRC
  • > 0.4% carbon -> surface hardness > 50 HRC

All the surfaces and radii to be hardened must be cleaned first. Surfaces and radii that are intended to be laser hardened must be marked with a blue felt-tip pen. Welded areas must be marked in red. These areas are left out during processing. If there are no markings present and the laser beam hits the weld metal, there is a risk of flaking and cracking.
